Pain travelling down your leg can be frustrating, uncomfortable, and sometimes even debilitating.
Two of the most common reasons are Sciatica and Piriformis Syndrome. While they may feel alike, they have different causes and often require different approaches to care.
At Birkdale Chiropractic, our goal is to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms so you can receive the most appropriate care and get back to doing the things you enjoy. 😊
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. It begins in the lower back and travels through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg.
Common causes include:
• Bulging or herniated discs
• Degenerative disc changes
• Spinal joint dysfunction or misalignment
• Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
Common Symptoms
✔️Pain radiating from the lower back into the buttock and leg
✔️Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
✔️Burning or electric shock-like pain
✔️Weakness in the leg or foot
✔️Symptoms often worsen with prolonged sitting
What is Piriformis Syndrome?
The piriformis is a small muscle located deep in the buttock. Its role is to help stabilise and rotate the hip.
In some people, the sciatic nerve runs underneath or even through this muscle. If the piriformis becomes tight, irritated, or inflamed, it can place pressure on the sciatic nerve and create symptoms similar to sciatica.
Common Symptoms
✔️ Deep aching pain in the buttock
✔️ Tenderness when sitting on the affected side
✔️Pain that may travel down the back of the leg
✔️Discomfort after prolonged sitting or driving
✔️Often worsens after running, walking, or climbing stairs
How Can You Tell the Difference?
While both conditions can cause leg pain, there are often some key differences:
Sciatica
• Usually originates from the lower back
• May involve numbness, tingling, or weakness
• Often linked to disc or spinal issues
• Symptoms may increase with bending, lifting, or coughing
Piriformis Syndrome
• Pain is usually centred in the buttock
• Often aggravated by sitting for long periods
• Typically related to muscle tension or hip dysfunction
• Lower back pain may be minimal or absent
Because symptoms can overlap, a thorough examination is essential to determine the true source of the problem.
How Chiropractic Care May Help
Chiropractic care focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying factors contributing to nerve irritation and movement dysfunction.
Depending on your assessment findings, care may include:
✔️ Chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function
✔️ Soft tissue techniques to reduce muscle tension
✔️ Mobility and stretching exercises
✔️ Postural and ergonomic advice
✔️ Movement strategies to support long-term recovery
The goal is not simply to mask symptoms, but to improve function, reduce stress on affected tissues, and help your body move more comfortably.
When Should You Seek Help?
If you are experiencing:
• Pain travelling into the leg
• Persistent buttock pain
• Numbness or tingling
• Difficulty sitting, walking, or sleeping comfortably
It may be time to have the issue assessed.
The sooner the cause is identified, the sooner an appropriate plan can be put in place to help you move and feel better.
